Do you see kids?

We are happy to provide dental care for your entire family! At Modern Dentistry, we recommend your child come see us when they get their first tooth or before they turn one, whichever comes first.

With a small child we suggest having their first appointment be with a parent or older sibling so they can observe everything that happens before their turn. We will then show them and explain the functions of all the instruments, let them ride up and down in the chair. Then, Dr. Brad will be able to "count" their teeth.

We understand that children might not want to cooperate during this new experience and so our goal is to keep it a positive encounter. We provide incentives for cooperating, like letting them pick a toy out of the treasure chest if we can check their teeth!

Parents and siblings play an important role with how a child will do at their dental appointment. It is very important to talk positively about going to the dentist and getting your own teeth cleaned so that your child can be excited to brush and take care of their own.

What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency requires immediate dental treatment due to oral trauma, severe decay, gum disease, tooth infection, or otherwise. For example, if you are in severe pain, have a knocked-out or loose tooth, damage to the teeth or jaw, have any signs of an infection, or have uncontrollable bleeding, you are likely experiencing a dental emergency.

If you are experiencing a dental emergency, try to remain calm and stop any bleeding. Please call us right away at (219) 464-9681. We will fit you in as soon as possible — even on the weekends! We will diagnose the problem, relieve your pain, and start treatment immediately if necessary.

How often should I have a dental exam and cleaning?

The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist twice a year to get a routine examination and cleaning. If you have a history of periodontal disease, you should get your teeth cleaned more often in order to prevent infections or disease. While most people need a dental checkup every 6 months, everyone is different, so it's good to ask what's best in your specific case. We’re always happy to answer your questions.

"I am a dentist who loves being a dentist. No judging, no moral high horse. Just honest, quality dental care provided with passion."

 – Dr. Brad Wisowaty
